Why Hangul was created
Read & notice
In 1443, King Sejong created the writing system originally called Hunminjeongeum. Before it, writing in Korea relied heavily on Chinese characters, and access to literacy was unequal. The new letters addressed the difficulty of expressing Korean through that writing tradition.
In 1446, a book explained the purpose and principles of the letters. These are different milestones: creation of the writing system and publication of its explanation. Hangul did not instantly replace every earlier writing practice. Learning its story helps us see writing as a tool for communication, not just a set of symbols.
